Please follow the schedule you were given on the last day of school in December.  Remember, we will not be doing elective or class changes.  If for some reason you have a period with no class assigned, please go to counseling to fix that.  School Loop also should reflect your updated class schedule.

H hall is now open.  Please be mindful of fence lines on campus as some projects are still going on.

This week in study hall we will be reviewing our Do the Right Thing lessons.  The purpose of the Do the Right Thing Lessons is so that everybody is reminded of those good habits and behaviors that lead to being successful in school.

Anime Club will be meeting after school in C13 tomorrow (Jan 9).  Our next meeting will be in two weeks on January 23rd.  Please mark your calendars!   See you all there!

Today basketball hosts Sierra Vista here, with the ladies playing first.  Come on out and support your Jaguars.

As a follow up and response to the concerning incident this morning involving the arrest of a near a bus transit station, please see the update below. As always, we encourage parents to help students understand how to be aware of their surroundings, not engage with strangers and immediately tell adults about strange or threatening incidents. We appreciate the immediate action and support from Vacaville PD, and are glad that the suspect was identified.

THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE HAS BEEN POSTED BY THE VACAVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT:

Two teenaged girls are to be commended for their quick thinking and actions yesterday, which have now led to the arrest of 29-year-old Vacaville resident Newton Payeah.

Yesterday morning while waiting for a bus at the Vacaville Transit Center on E. Monte Vista Avenue, Payeah approached two girls who were waiting for a bus to take them to school. He asked them if they would like to smoke marijuana with him and offered to give them a ride, identifying himself as an Uber driver. These brave young ladies did the right thing by not engaging him further and got on their bus when it arrived. They then reported what happened to an adult which resulted in police being called.

Our children's safety is extremely important to us and we immediately launched an investigation as to what occurred. Information was being shared on other social media platforms that in some situations was not correct. We want you to know we are committed to providing you information that is timely, accurate, and direct from the source on our social media platforms and sometimes that takes a little longer than we all may want, however this ensures accuracy in what's shared. Officers from our Youth Services Section were actively following up on the case when we learned Payeah returned to the transit center this morning. Officers immediately responded and safely took Payeah into custody. We were able to determine he does not work for Uber as a driver. Payeah was arrested for annoying a child under the age of 18 and booked into Solano County Jail. Below is a picture of Payeah at the time of his arrest and the car he arrived in.

This situation could have ended much different if not for the excellent decisions made by the girls. Please use this event to have those important conversations with your children about how to handle themselves should they ever be in similar circumstances.

Anyone with information regarding Payeah's actions is asked to contact Officer Erwin Ramirez at (707) 449-5200. Media inquiries can be directed to Lt. Mark Donaldson at (707) 449-5260.

Hello VUSD Families,

We hope this message finds your families safe and well. Our hearts go out to those who have been evacuated or have lost loved ones, pets and homes in this tragedy. Thank you for your support as we work through the challenges of this disaster.

Because the evacuation areas in Solano County have increased, affecting even more VUSD families and staff and the air quality is now at hazardous levels, all VUSD schools and offices will be closed on Thursday October 12th and Friday October 13th.

School will be in session today.

VUSD schools will be open today with measures being taken to reduce smoke exposure for staff and students. Students who stay home with parental permission due to poor air quality will have excused absences.

“Our thoughts go out to our Fairfield/Napa/Sonoma neighbors and staff who are dealing with evacuations and tragedy. We understand that many VUSD parents cannot get time off for poor air quality and cancelling school creates childcare and income challenges for many. Keeping schools open, but excusing absences for those who choose to keep students home is the best way we can support our families during this tragedy while maintaining educational continuity.” VUSD Superintendent Jane Shamieh.

All VUSD schools will be collecting donations for fire victims today.

VUSD will follow data and guidelines from the Spare the Air Current Conditions table and the Air Quality Index. The following are measures that VUSD staff will take to ensure minimal exposure to unhealthy air.

See more information about measures we will take to minimize smoke exposure for staff and students.

Here’s Ethan with the weather. Hello jags, this weekend it will become a bit warmer than it was this week. The highs will be in the upper 80s and lower 90s. But it’s really starting to chill off at night, grab that extra blanket. There will be little wind, except for sunday when we may have up to 16 miles per hour winds.  We aren’t expected to have any rain. It’s gorgeous fall weather so get out and enjoy this weekend. Apple Hill is open and full of great fun and treats, not to mention apples!

Need some extra help on homework, or a quiet place to get those missing assignments done?  Maybe you’re just looking for a quiet place to get some work done after school.  Homework Club is now open after school in the library on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.  The library will be open for an hour after school on each of these days, with a staff member there to help you.

Here’s Mason S with the sports news.

On Tuesday, 10/3, Cross Country had a home meet vs Golden West.
Boys defeated Golden West 16 to 95 (lowest score wins).  Kellen Ruiz finished 1st with a time of 10:33.  Tate Mosley took 2nd and Andrew Hagerman took 3rd
Girls also defeated Golden West 16 to 86 (lowest score wins).  Ella Conelly took first with a time of 12:03.  Ayanna Camacho took 2nd and Carnela Naranjo took 3rd.

This Tuesday Willis Jepson and Golden West played added another great game to their football rivalry with Jepson coming out with the win by a score of 12-0.  The Jaguars were led by their quarter back Ryan Vaughan who threw two touchdown passes one in the first half to Luke Levengood and then a 30 yard hook up to Ethan Birch in the game’s last two minutes.  On the ground Jepson’s leading rushers were Anthony Bridge and Tim Plowman.  The offensive line was held down by Lucca Sartorio and Zach Moore.  On Defense Jepson had 5 interceptions two by Ethan Birch and one each from Justin Menesini, Ryan Vaughn, and Jason Brauning.  Also playing well on Defense for the Jaguars was Nathaniel Monroe and Francisco Ochoa.  Jepson is now 2-0 in league play and takes on  Vaca Pena this Thursday at Vaca Pena.

Today our football team, volleyball team and cross country team will be going to Vaca Pena to attempt another victory.

October is National Bully Awareness Month.  At Jepson, there are many ways to get help if you feel you are being bullied.  One of the resources you may not be aware of is that we have an anonymous bully box outside of Counseling.  This box is a place where you can leave a note for a counselor, either about something you’ve experienced, or about something you’ve witnessed.  The notes are not shared with anyone except counseling and administration.  It’s important that we know about what you are going through so we can help – we can’t help if we don’t know.

On Tuesday, 9/26, Jepson runners completed their first cross country meet. The team traveled to VCS.
Boys won with a score of 19 to 48 (lowest score wins) Kellen Ruiz took first with a time of 10:13.  Tate Mosley took 2nd and Andrew Hagerman took 3rd. Girls also won with a score of 22 to 49 (lowest score wins).  Emma Boyd took 2nd with a time of 11:56.  Ella Conolley took 3rd and Ayanna Camacho took 4th.
Come cheer on the team on today with our first home meet vs Golden West.

Today we are also hosting Golden West’s volleyball and flag football team so come help cheer them on to a win.

Hello VUSD Families,

As you probably remember, VUSD has been evaluating our school start times with the intent to create optimal learning environments for our students. Significant research shows that the circadian rhythm (or sleep cycle) for humans changes during the adolescent years. While young children typically are naturally wide awake early in the morning, teens biologically struggle with waking early, regardless of the time they go to sleep. Research shows that aligning school start times to better fit students' biological rhythms results in improved student performance and success.

VUSD has been evaluating school start times for over two years. This evaluation included:

  • reviewing extensive research
  • recommendations from health organizations like the National Sleep Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control, and the American Academy of Pediatrics
  • school district transportation
  • cost analysis
  • feedback from principals
  • polls for students, parents and teachers

The VUSD Board of Trustees have taken all of these into careful consideration and have voted to adjust school start times for the 2018-19 school year. In the year to come, we will work with VUSD staff, City Coach, athletics, Vacaville Police and Fire and other community organizations in preparation of these new times. We understand that this positive change for student learning requires some adjustments for our families and community partners. We appreciate your willingness to work with us in fitting our educational system to meet students' needs.

More information about school schedules for 2018-19, research, articles, legislation, health tips and news on later school start time can been found here.

Hola VUSD Familias,

All Dance Drill Team Club members, it's not too late to order a uniform tank or jersey.  Get an order form from Mrs. Thiessen in E-19 and you can turn it in at Super Saturday this coming Saturday.

Here’s Chloe with the weather update. Today’s weather will be 96 then it will start to get cooler through the week, today will be 92, Wednesday will be 85, and Thursday will be 83. Although there was a 20% chance of rain yesterday, we didn’t see a drop. Hopefully, fall and cooler weather will be here soon.

Super Saturday is this Saturday, September 16th from 8-12.  This session we will offer Dance Drill Team for anyone who would like to come and try it out.  There will be Vaca High Drill Team members helping out and free pizza.  Pick up a permission slip from Mrs. Thiessen in E-19 or the front office.

Here’s Mason with sports news.

Football and Volleyball tryouts ended last week and teams have been formed. We’ll have the rosters on Thursday’s bulletin.

Remember, it is suicide awareness week.  Here is a quick fact, Over 60 percent of all people who die by suicide suffer from major depression. Please seek help if you think you or a friend suffers from depression.

Now, for a lighter piece of news. In the United Kingdom, a 7 year old girl pulls what’s thought to be King Arthur’s legendary sword Excalibur from the bottom of Dozmary Pool. Matilda Jones was taking a swim in the lake on Tuesday when a shining metal beneath the water’s surface caught her eye. Ironically enough, the discovery came soon after Paul Jones, Matilda’s father, told his daughters the legend of King Arthur. Legend is that the sword could only possessed by the rightful ruler of England, and that before King Arthur died, he threw the sword into the Dozmary Pool returning it to the Lady of the Lake. Paul believes the sword to be an old movie prop as it seems to be only twenty to thirty years old. But who knows; Matilda could have found the real Excalibur, and just might be the true sovereign of England!

7th and 8th Graders interested in becoming a part of the Willis Jepson Dance Drill Team, please come to an informational meeting in E-19 Friday after school at 12:30.  We will have some informational flyers for your parents and let you know about all the fun activities we will be participating in this year.

Picture day will be tomorrow, September 1.  Reminder, the dress code applies to school pictures.

Here’s Mason R. with the sports news.

Did you forget to sign up for Cross Country?  It’s not too late to join.  You must have a physical completed before you can run.  See Mr Velasquez during PE or Mrs Coldiron in J47.

Sports physicals are tonight and Tuesday, Sept. 5 at Jepson.  Cost is $15.  They will be held in the library.  All those wishing to try out or join a sports team must have a physical. Please bring a parent or guardian with you to sign the paperwork.

If you missed the flag football meeting on Tuesday, see Coach Birch in C11.

Tomorrow is a minimum day and Monday is a holiday for Labor Day. There will be no school. Many people think that Labor Day is a day for family and a barbeque. It is a day to celebrate the end of summer, but it’s also a day to thank all Americans who go to work to make our lives comfortable. Speaking of end of summer, here’s Gabi with the weather.

Even though Labor Day seems like the end of summer it will still be hot for a while. Tomorrow expected high is 115!! WOW! Daytime highs will range continue well over a 100 degrees and upper 90’s for many days.

The impact of the continued heat wave… Moderate to high risk of heat related illness, especially for sensitive groups: elderly, children, sick people, animals. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a DANGEROUS SITUATION in which heat illnesses are likely. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, and stay out of the sun.

Do you love to dance and perform? Come join the 2017-2018 Jepson Color Guard Team. Rehearsals start Tuesday, September 5, at 7am in the gym.

And last, don’t forget Jaguars always do the right thing.  The dress code and cell phone policy are in effect and will be enforced.  Please know these policies and make sure you are following them.

Friday, Sept. 1st is a minimum day and Monday is a holiday for Labor Day. There will be no school.

Guess what folks? It’s still officially summer and still hot out there. Strong high pressure will result in hot temperatures across the region this week with moderate to high risk for heat related illnesses. Daytime highs FOR THIS WEEK AND NEXT will range 100 to 110 degrees with overnight lows in mainly in the upper 60s to mid 70s.

IMPACTS of continued heat Wave… Moderate to high risk of heat related illness, especially for sensitive groups: elderly, children, sick people, animals. An Excessive Heat Warning means that a prolonged period of dangerously hot temperatures will occur. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a DANGEROUS SITUATION in which heat illnesses are likely. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, and stay out of the sun.

It’s still raining in Texas and many parts of Houston and surrounding areas are flooded. Keep all these residents in your thoughts for their safety and being able to return to their homes soon.

And last, don’t forget Jaguars always do the right thing.  The dress code and cell phone policy are in effect and will be enforced.  Please know these policies and make sure you are following them.

Have a great day and stay hydrated.

August 21 Eclipse Resources!

On August 21 all of America will experience a solar eclipse. Some areas will witness a total eclipse (when the moon entirely covers the sun); other regions will witness a partial eclipse.

The Bay Area will experience a 76% eclipse, with the moon beginning to cover the sun at 9:01 am, reaching maximum coverage at 10:15 am, and then moving away from the sun at 11:37 am.

Some schools have made plans for students to go outside and watch the eclipse using special solar eclipse glasses and/or cards for pinhole viewing. Please check your school's website to see what kinds of activities are planned.

If you want to send your child to school with glasses for viewing the eclipse, please be sure to provide designated solar eclipse glasses. Staring at even a sliver of the sun without adequate protection can cause permanent eye damage. (You can find more information about choosing safe glasses on the American Astronomical Society's website.)

The following websites have lots of layperson-friendly eclipse information to share with your families and friends:

May is Mental Health Month. The intent of this observance is to bring awareness to growing mental health needs within our culture, and to fight the stigma associated with mental illness.  The Netflix series “13 Reasons Why” has brought national and local attention to issues related to mental illness and suicide.  Please take an opportunity to discuss the attached talking points with your children.  We need to work together to spread the message to our children that help is always available.

KCRA 3 news reportCBS 13 news story
Dear Parents,

We can never be too careful when it comes to protecting our children.  A dangerous “game” surfaced on social media a while back, particularly with students in other countries. The game is being talked about by student in our schools.

The “Blue Whale Challenge” app involves the enticement of students into risky behavior that could result in the final challenge of taking one’s life. While we do not know of any VUSD students who are playing it, we want to make sure that you are aware of it.

Evidently, it has been removed from the app store.  We are appreciative of members of the community who brought this to our attention; our children benefit when we work together to protect them.

Sincerely,

Kim Forrest

Papa Roach
Papa Roach -- a world-touring, Grammy-nominated, triple-platinum rock band with members who originally hail from Vacaville – will break away from their album promotion schedule on May 3 to come home to deliver a message to Solano County children: Be fearless, dream big, aim high to develop your full creative potential.

Members of the band will return to their hometown for a special dedication ceremony at Imagine That!  – Vacaville’s newly opened hands-on learning Exploratorium for children of all ages and abilities. Exhibits at the center encourage children to be free to imagine, create, and welcome sciences and art into their lives.

The highlight of this special ceremony will be Vacaville Mayor Len Augustine proclaiming May 3 as Papa Roach Day in Vacaville. In honor of Papa Roach’s generous support of our community, organizers have created a special exhibit at the center that celebrates their musical success. One portion of the exhibit invites youngsters to play out their rock dreams and musical talents.

Papa Roach formed in 1993, with Jacoby Shaddix, a student at Vacaville High, and Jerry Horton of Vanden High, since that time and with Members Tobin Esperance and Tony Palermo, Papa Roach have achieved critical and commercial acclaim selling over 25 million albums worldwide.

The dedication will take place from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3 at Vacaville’s Imagine That!, 848-B Alamo Drive.

For local information, contact Lauren Runow of Imagine That!, (707) 474-5317.

The results are in and the thimble is out. Monopoly-owner Hasbro has revealed that the iconic thimble token will be removed from the game.

As part of the brand's "Monopoly Token Madness" campaign, more than 4 million people voted to decide which eight tokens should be part of the next iteration of the game. Folks were given more than 50 options, including old favorites like the shoe, top hat and Scottie dog and new designs like a T-Rex, rubber duck and an emoji. Hasbro has yet to name which token will be replacing the thimble, but it will unveil all eight tokens on March 19, a day it dubs World Monopoly Day. Updated versions of the game will be available in August.

An oak tree adjacent to and upstream from the footbridge near Cheyenne Court is in danger of falling and hitting the bridge. Because of the high level of water, City staff are unable to determine how stable the tree is at this point. As a result, the City will be closing off access to this bridge until water levels drop and they are able to access the safety of the situation.

A Miracle

By Devin Nance

Last Friday afternoon, during the afternoon rain storm, two baby squirrels fell 50 feet out of the tree next to the counseling office. Kids took the squirrels to the office where Ms. Julie warmed the wet, freezing squirrels. She called the Suisun Wildlife Rescue Center to see what could be done for them. Unfortunately, the squirrels couldn’t be returned to their original mother because they had been handled by humans. Ms. Cook drove them to the Rescue Center. The squirrels have been adopted by mother squirrels. A container is in the front office for donations to help sponsor the animals, which will help pay for their food and other things that will help them survive. If we can raise 40 dollars, 20 dollars for each squirrel, we can help these squirrels lives! Wish the siblings luck for their new happy life at the Suisun Wildlife Rescue Center!

Super Bowl weekend! We’ll have a full report on Tuesday.

Did Phil see his shadow yesterday? Here’s a news report.   Yesterday was the 131st annual groundhog day. Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, signaling six more weeks of winter. That's the forecast - at least according to a slightly grouchy-looking brown rodent who didn't appear to be happy to be disturbed this morning by revelers in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, site of the country's biggest Groundhog Day celebration. Predictions have been accurate 100 percent of the time. More winter, Phil said. I’m going back to bed.  The pleasantly plump Pennsylvania marmot who claims he “is the only true weather forecasting groundhog” — woke up Thursday morning, crawled out of his hole and saw his shadow. Since the groundhog’s first prediction in 1887, Phil has seen his shadow 102 times and not seen it on just 17 occasions.

Next week is dress up week for Pennies for Patients campaign. Monday is Mathlete vs. Athlete. Dress up as a nerd or as an athlete. Next money pick up is Thursday, Feb. 9th.

Yesterday afternoon students noticed smoky skies and strange smells as they left school. At approximately 6:39 a.m. on Tuesday, firefighters were dispatched to the Hay Kingdom, a hay store in Winters after receiving reports of a fire due to a spontaneous combustion, or an ignition of organic matter. The fire did no damage to structures and there was no injuries but as a result, the smoke left our Vacaville skies cloudy.

According to Brad Lopez, Dixon Fire Department captain, the fire spread roughly 100 ft. long, 50 ft. wide, and 50 ft. tall. “Hay fires are extremely difficult to put out,” revealed Lopez. “They require too much water, so we usually just let them burn out on their own.” It took about an hour before the fire was contained by the fire crews. Yolo and Solano health officials recommend staying indoors until the air clears. Special report written by Tristan Johns

Monday is a holiday for Martin Luther King, Jr. We won’t have school on Monday, it’s a three day weekend.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday celebrates the life and legacy of a man who brought hope and healing to America. We commemorate as well, the timeless values he taught us through his example — the values of courage, truth, justice, compassion, dignity, humility and service that so radiantly defined Dr. King’s character and empowered his leadership. On this holiday, we commemorate the universal, unconditional love, forgiveness and nonviolence that empowered his revolutionary spirit.
